John McCardell (former Middlebury College Pres.)and his movement to lower the drinking age to 18 continues to get press. The latest on CNN.
I do think MADD has done a lot of good. The entire designated driver idea was created by them. They’ve saved thousands of live at least with that concept. I completely disagree with them on the 21 drinking age though. It’s clear that it hasn’t stopped underage drinking at all. It’s only made it unhealthier by pushing it underground.

Research has found more than 40 percent of college students reported at least one symptom of alcohol abuse or dependence. One study has estimated more than 500,000 full-time students at four-year colleges suffer injuries each year related in some way to drinking, and about 1,700 die in such accidents.

More than anything else, this statement bothers me:”It’s very clear the 21-year-old drinking age will not be enforced at those campuses,” said Laura Dean-Mooney, national president of MADD.I’m questioning whether or not this woman went to college.It’s funny how I’m still under 21 (so… close…), but I don’t find myself as passionate to this cause as you. What I do very much agree with is that a large percentage of teenagers in the United States have an extremely unhealthy relationship with alcohol.I’m much more inclined to agree with “European” (French) ideas about social drinking and nearly non-existent enforcement of drinking and purchasing ages. Social drinking is so much healthier and more fun than binge drinking.Any idea how humiliating it was to not be able to have dinner with my summer league ultimate team because I was underage and they were sitting in a ‘bar’ section of the restaurant? Even though I had no intention of taking so much as a sip of their beers?Wicked humiliating.
